The last three bullet points on this list lead some scholars to suggest that Ramesses’ son was actually the pharaoh of the Exodus. His name was Merneptah and he had to wait until Ramesses died in his 90s before ascending the throne. I wanted to be sure to test the Merneptah option proposed by scholars before eliminating Ramesses’ family as possible pharaohs. That would require more filming. But since the film needed additional footage anyway, this would just be another item to add to the list.

One of the harder decisions I had to make was whether or not I should go back to Egypt in the middle of its revolution during 2012. But that is what happened. The film project had been going on now for ten years. I had often struggled to work on the film and yet not neglect my regular job of running a studio that produced TV commercials and web videos. There were stretches of time when I wasn’t able to touch the film at all. I knew everyone on the team, including myself, wanted the project to be finished.

I awoke to the first light of dawn. This morning would be different from others. I looked up at the ceiling and just knew I had to return to Egypt. If I didn’t go back, I wouldn’t be able to finish the film. Of all times to be planning a trip, 2012 seemed a bit crazy. But I felt peaceful about the idea of returning. I called David Wessner.

“We can’t make the kind of film we need to make without going back to Egypt,” I said. “I don’t have the footage to finish it.”

“What would be the exact purpose of this trip?” he asked as he had on so many previous occasions.

“I’d ask David Rohl to come and take me to key locations where he sees connections to the Exodus story.”

“Okay.”

“We need to interview some more viewpoints from other Egyptologists and get answers about a new aspect of the debate we’ve uncovered. We need an Egyptian perspective as well.”

“Anything else?”

“Our early footage was not shot in high definition, so we need updated temple shots, tombs, and some more recreations to tell the story.”

The other end of the line was quiet again. Then he spoke. “I’ve never been a part of a project that seemed to be so hard to control.”

“I know it keeps getting bigger. But I think we are closing in on some big answers.”

“I think you’re right. You should go back to Egypt.”

David at various times could see that what we were doing was visionary. And I believed that as well. We both felt we were uncovering something profound. I kept pushing for excellence in every aspect, and we had to follow every important lead. Thankfully, David had the courage and vision to back me up.

That didn’t mean we didn’t have a budget. We did. We just kept adjusting it to accommodate the ongoing investigation. This required our business manager, Diane Walker, to have as much patience as David did.
